Abstract
During spring of 2020 the corona pandemic (Covid -19) affected everyday life for people all over the world. Teachers had to find new ways to reach out to the students, ensemble teachers included. The purpose of this study is to look into how ensemble teachers within pop, rock and jazz genres handled and experienced the transition to distance education. The concept “the core of the ensemble subject” is used to highlight what the teachers generally focus on in their teaching before and during the pandemic. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four informants. All of them worked as ensemble teachers during spring of 2020 – two of them at upper secondary school, and two of them at adult education centers. This is a case study, and... (More)

The study is based on qualitative interviews with four informants. This is a case study, and the empirical material was collected through video conversations during fall of 2020. Technical issues made it hard for the teachers to reach the core of the ensemble subject during distance education. The reasons were primarily immeasurable parameters such as not being able to see and hear each other in the room, and not being able to feel the joy of playing together. Face-to-face interaction was important when it came to building trust and relationships, especially at the beginning of the school year. Therefore, distance education turned out to be more effective when combined with face-to-face classes. Alongside the negative experiences of distance education, there were positive insights and discoveries worth keeping for the future. Examples of this were better preparatory work among students, and improved skills in use of digital tools. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
Under vårterminen 2020 inträffade coronapandemin (Covid-19) vars effekter blev omfattande världen över. (Less)
