Abstract
The concept of sustainable development has been widely spread and practiced within urban planning. However there is no easy answer to how to define and create social sustainability. Therefore four categories that indicate social sustainability have been used to study the phenomenon. These are:
Safety
Meeting places
Participation in the planning process
Green areas
The purpose of this study is to examine how social sustainability is taken into account through physical planning by the municipality and developers. To do this a case study has been conducted of the new production of student houses located at Kämnärsrätten in Lund. Further methods that have been used to collect data are three semi structured interviews with five key persons... (More)

The purpose of this study is to examine how social sustainability is taken into account through physical planning by the municipality and developers. To do this a case study has been conducted of the new production of student houses located at Kämnärsrätten in Lund. Further methods that have been used to collect data are three semi structured interviews with five key persons and a qualitative document analysis. What can be concluded is that the indicators of social sustainability are often overlapping or in conflict with one and another. Another conclusion is that all four indicators of social sustainability are being taken into account by actors involved and the many advantages of new production can be considered to outweigh the disadvantages. Also goals from Agenda 2030 and the national plan for sustainable development is being adapted in the project. (Less)
