Abstract
In 2014, Trelleborg municipality pointed out tät blandstad (the compact city) to be the main strategy for the city’s future development. This work addresses the common Swedish planning strategy, towards the compact city through densification strategies, with a focus on density and diversity and the relationship between them. This is done with a broad example of literature referring to quality of life in urban environments and how the built environment is linked to the social shaping of cities. Using GIS, measurements on both density and diversity have been made with reliance on previously tested methods in an attempt to quantify some of the many important aspects of the compact city. These morphological measurements are applied to areas... (More)

Using GIS, measurements on both density and diversity have been made with reliance on previously tested methods in an attempt to quantify some of the many important aspects of the compact city. These morphological measurements are applied to areas that aim to contribute to the compact city in the city of Trelleborg and to analyse the work towards the compact city. Following the results of the measurements, a discussion is made on how the compact city can be evaluated with quantitative methods. The work concludes that there are many aspects that need to be taken into consideration when building the compact city, and that the presented ones are only a few of them. (Less)
