Abstract
Strategic planning is meant to guide for the long-term, which makes it vulnerable to trends in urban planning. If a trend or a theory is not researched for the typology where it will be used, the consequences will be unknown. This makes it important to understand how planners translate academic theories into strategies for local planning. By researching the municipality of Borås, Sweden, through interviews with planners and a politician, results show that whilst academic research has been consulted when developing the strategy, there has been mainly one source. This opens it up for risks which are not accounted for in said research. Whilst working with developing this strategy into action the municipality takes a bottom-up approach through... (More)

Whilst working with developing this strategy into action the municipality takes a bottom-up approach through questionnaires and workshops with inhabitants. This makes it more applicable for the municipality's own typology. The goal of the strategy is also oriented towards ecological sustainability whilst the work being done is socially sustainable, differing from some research which put emphasis on the economic benefits of polycentrism.
