Abstract
It is projected that by 2050 two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities. There is a need for well-planned cities that can handle the rapid population growth. The focus of most studies has been on the people living in the area, whereas the role of the built environment has not received much attention. Changes in the physical environment are, however, pointed out as one of the strategies to reduce urban segregation. This bachelor’s thesis aims to analyze how socially sustainable strategies in Sundbyberg are to minimize physical barriers. This study investigates what developments are planned to reduce barriers. This bachelor’s thesis aims to analyze how socially sustainable strategies in Sundbyberg are to minimize physical barriers. This study investigates what developments are planned to reduce barriers. This will be done by conducting a case study of Enköpingsvägen and the surrounding area. Visualizing topographical relations, data, and analyzing municipality documents have been used to get a comprehensive view of the area and planned developments. The results indicated that Enköpingsvägen is creating a social barrier by limiting people’s movement in the area. The road, therefore, makes people experience the other side of Enköpingsvägen as further away than it is (in reality). The strategies to reduce the effect of the barrier are focusing on development and how to make the city more attractive. The issues concerning urban segregation and justice are not achieving much attention. (Less)
