Abstract
Due to climate change more frequent and vigorous weather events are expected. This can be extreme precipitation that can lead to flooding, heat waves and drought. When urban areas are densified the imperviousness of the land surface will grow due to the increase of hard surfaces. This makes the areas more vulnerable to flooding and the hard surface will trap heat in the city which can result in high temperatures so that the population of the city does not get a chance to recover from the heat during the night. Densified urban areas and a growing population can also contribute to bad air quality and noise pollution. This study aims to identify priority areas for multifunctional green infrastructure siting in Malmö, Sweden. The study uses the GISP-model introduced by Meerow & Newell (2017) as inspiration. The analysis of the priority areas will be based on six criteria decided by a document analysis that covers climate change adaptation and social aspects. The six criteria will be used in a GIS-based multi criteria analysis to calculate the priority areas. The study will also investigate how climate change adaptation and the need to meet social and human demands can be dealt with simultaneously by the use of green infrastructure. The study shows that there are several climate change adaptation related aspects and social aspects that green infrastructure can contribute to in Malmö. Green infrastructure can be multifunctional and therefore help solve different issues at the same place. The study shows that the areas in most need for multifunctional green infrastructure in Malmö are located in the northern parts of the municipality and the northern and eastern parts of the urban area. It is found by the study that it is of high importance that strategical planning of green infrastructure is included in the development of the city and in new development areas. This is significant not only for the sake of climate change adaptation but for the wellbeing of the population and biodiversity of the city. (Less)
