- Abstract
- Outside the box. On archivists' views on objects in municipal archives
Historically objects in archives and objects as "documents" have been discussed for a long time. The focus of the discussion has generally been on defining what is a document, and what is not, and later what is in turn an act and thus belongs in the archive, and what does not. An object is generally not defined as an act. However, most archivists will sooner or later come across such non-traditional archive material. Some may say, as is further discussed in this essay, that this material does not belong in the archive but rather in a museum. There may however be other values that can be taken into account in terms of the objects' being or not being in archives, but... (More) - Outside the box. There may however be other values that can be taken into account in terms of the objects' being or not being in archives, but the type of archive can be decisive for what significance is attached to these. In this master’s thesis we investigate how archivists at municipal archives view objects in the archive in relation to legislation but also in the light of their own experiences and value perceptions. With the aim of examining a perceived situation within a particular context, semi-structured interviews with archivists working at seven different municipal archives in Sweden have been carried out. In order to understand how value might be discerned a theoretical framework is applied to the result. Core contributions to the theoretical framework come from axiology, macro-appraisal and thoughts developed by the classical Chinese philosopher Mòzǐ. We also elucidate the importance of materiality of objects and its role in value creation regarding said objects. Several different values, and parallel value perceptions, have proven to be able to affect the view of objects and their raison d'être in archives. Other findings include the effects of the professionalisation of the archival profession and how the archivist's individual experiences and frames of reference affect the view and assessment of value of objects.
