Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine school counselors’ experiences of relationship building with students in online counseling during the covid-19 pandemic. The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews with six school counselors from different municipalities. The empirical data was analyzed and discussed using past research, Carl Roger’s theory on client-centered therapy and Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory. The results show that the school counselors experienced both challenges and opportunities related to relationship building using online counseling. The opportunities included reaching out to new groups of students and using the background environment as a way to interact and build relationships with students. We live in a digital world where covid-19 has accelerated the increased use of digital tools. No one knows for sure how long the pandemic will last, but the digital development will continue regardless. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of further investigation of how relationships can be created and maintained through videophone programs. (Less)
