- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to explore women’s experiences as relatives to one or more individuals with substance abuse (codependency). The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews with seven different women with experiences of being close to someone with substance abuse. Our empirical material was analysed using both Yvonne Hirdman’s gender theory as well as Arlie Russell Hochschild’s theory on emotional labour to explore the women’s experiences on a structural level. We found that the substance abuse of a close family member had consequences on several areas in life: emotions, economy, career and relationships. The study also showed that these consequences were due to a combination of being codependent and female. Lastly, the study found a complexity in being codependent to different people and how the expectations on the female gender change according to the relationship between the substance abuser and the codependent person.
