- Abstract (Swedish)
- This study aims to examine outreach workers’ view of developing trust through communication with young adults living in exposed areas. I seek an understanding of how outreach workers justify and excuse the development of trust and mistrust in the interaction with young adults. The empirical data consists of five semi-structured telephone-interviews with outreach workers who are active in five different exposed areas in a large city. The theoretical framework of this study is Lyman and Scotts (1968) theory about Accounts and Rothstein and Kumlins (2001) theory about the development of Social Capital and interpersonal trust in a society. This study indicates that relations built on trust between outreach workers and young adults is crucial for an effective and positive motivational work. The analysis also highlights that outreach workers justify and excuse different strategies and aspects in the development of trust and mistrust. To be clear and transparent in the communication, to show respect for the voluntary aspect, to be available and to maintain a regular contact with the young adults have proven to be trust-building aspects. My interviews also show that outreach workers face challenges in their quest for trusting relationships. The young adults’ contempt for authorities, suspicion towards the outreach workers and the fact that parallel structures exist in exposed areas have proven to be aspects that contribute to
mistrust in the interaction. Furthermore, this study also indicates that outreach work is a crucial part of the prevention work against juvenile delinquency. (Less)
