Abstract
This study aims to understand how and if the youth recreational centers (fritidsgårdar) in Malmö are able to help the young people that visit them handle different forms of social vulnerability. We have used the report made by the Noa group (Nationella operativa avdelningen) that is part of the police authority, which has identified four vulnerable areas in Malmö. Through the conducted interviews with staff from the youth recreational centers, we want to understand the general view of the term “vulnerable area” and if it correlates with their view of social vulnerability that young people face. We have analyzed the interviews using Erving Goffman’s theory on stigmatization, and further Loïc Wacquant’s theory of territorial stigmatization,... (More)

We have analyzed the interviews using Erving Goffman’s theory on stigmatization, and further Loïc Wacquant’s theory of territorial stigmatization, as well as the psychological term “prosocial behaviour”. Social vulnerability is a present theme among the respondents included in this study. Staff who work in vulnerable areas noticed the young people’s forming of an identity clearly associated with the stigmatization of these areas. Furthermore, the interviews showed that youth recreational centers act as a safe haven for young people. The areas where they are located also play a significant part in leading a healthy lifestyle. Everyone interviewed for this study noted that encouraging prosocial behaviour is effective but is not successful with everyone. (Less)
