Abstract
This study examines the current Swedish media debate regarding gender-affirming care and treatment for children and youth. The aim was to determine the overarching discourses surrounding gender dysphoria, what actors appear in the debate and on what terms, as well as to examine how danger is constructed in the debate. The material for the study consists of 20 opinion based articles from popular news websites. These articles were divided into two categories depending on how they relate to the subject of gender-affirming care; those who are critical of the established treatment, and those who view it positively. The analysis was made using the three-step model developed by Norman Fairclough for critical discourse analysis as well as Carol... (More)
This study examines the current Swedish media debate regarding gender-affirming care and treatment for children and youth. The analysis was made using the three-step model developed by Norman Fairclough for critical discourse analysis as well as Carol Bacchis and Susan Goodwins questions designed to detect how problems are represented in texts. In general, actors who have a personal affiliation to gender-affirming care are granted a voice in the debate. Relatives are the most prominently featured actors, followed by doctors and those who work with sexuality and gender issues in a professional capacity. These actors convey a particular knowledge and expertise that is valued in the debate, which places them in a higher position of power. Adults convey their view of gender dysphoria and its established treatment by speaking on behalf of children and youth, who in turn remain silent, or silenced. The three overarching discourses identified were the scientific discourse, the health discourse and the age discourse. These discourses present danger in different ways, all centering on how health is impacted negatively either by receiving gender-affirming care or by not having access to it. (Less)
