- Abstract
- The present study explored spirituality and alcoholism from an existential, psychological and sociological perspective. The aim of the study was to examine what the spiritual aspects of the twelve-step program meant to members of Anonymous Alcoholics (AA). The sample consisted of eight active members of AA, all located in Sweden. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews, then analyzed through a thematic analysis grounded in a phenomenological approach. The results consisted of five themes: To dedicate oneself to the program; Personal faith; The Community; Service and sponsorship; and New approaches. altogether spirituality has had and continues to have substantial importance to all of them, both in regard to sobriety and quality of life. Several informants suggested that the main problem of an alcoholic is a lack of spirituality. All informants claim that spirituality enabled new ways of looking at, and relating to, life, oneself and others, as well as the substance abuse and one’s ability and prospects to change. Several informants described vital spiritual experiences, some momentary and highly intense, others more like awakenings over time. To stay in touch with this spiritual power, however that power is interpreted by the individual, was claimed to be a key to continued sobriety. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

För flera menades alkoholistens grundproblem vara just brist på andlighet. Andligheten beskrevs ha möjliggjort nya förhållningssätt vad gäller synen på den egna beroendeproblematiken liksom ens förmåga till förändring, samt inställningen och relationen till sig själv, andra och livet. Flera informanter beskrev starka och viktiga upplevelser av kontakt med det andliga, både specifika ögonblick av intensiv andlighet och andliga uppvaknanden över tid. Att bibehålla kontakten med Kraften, i den form en uppfattar den, menades vara centralt för ett fortsatt nyktert liv. (Less)
