Forskningsfråga: Hur porträtteras framgångsrika tränare i idrottsvärlden i
dokumentären The Playbook?

Syfte: Studiens syfte är att undersöka vilka föreställningar om
ledarskap som synliggörs i populärkultur genom en analys av
dokumentären The Playbook. Vidare ämnar studien att
tydliggöra hur konstruktionen av idrottsledare relaterar till den
teoretiska utvecklingen av vad en ledare bör vara med fokus på
heroiska och postheroiska synsätt.

Metod: En kvalitativ dokumentstudie har genomförts med hjälp av diskurs- och medieanalys för att besvara frågeställningen och uppnå syftet. Studien utgår från ett socialkonstruktionistiskt synsätt och ett abduktivt tillvägagångssätt har tillämpats.

Teoretiska perspektiv: Teorikapitlet inleds med tidigare forskning inom ämnet
ledarskap i populärkultur. Sedan presenteras befintlig teori om heroiskt ledarskap, vilket inkluderar transformativt ledarskap, karismatisk ledarskap och Great Man Theory. Därefter redogörs det för ett kritiskt perspektiv på det heroiska ledarskapet som mynnar ut i den sista teoridelen om coachande ledarskap som är en form av postheroiskt ledarskap.

Resultat: Utgångspunkten för studiens empiriska resultat är Netflix-dokumentären The Playbook (2020). Empirin är uppdelad efter de teman som identifierats i relation till porträtteringen, vilka är den gode hjälten, den onde hjälten, den fule hjälten och hjälte eller syndabock.

Slutsats: Studiens implikationer visar att porträtteringen av ledarna
återkommande inkluderar hjälteliknande attribut. Det framkommer också att det coachande ledarskapet som ett kulturellt accepterad synsätt inte verkar vara så frånkopplat från tidigare heroiska ledarskapsteorier som teorin antyder. Kopplingarna kan tänkas vara särskilt framträdande i dokumentärens framställning av tränarna eftersom förmågan att leverera resultat står i centrum för utövandet av deras ledarskap. (Less)

Theoretical perspectives: Initially a brief overview of previous research on the subject of leadership in popular culture is introduced. The theoretical approaches are divided into heroic leadership and post heroic
leadership. The heroic theories which will be addressed are transformational leadership, charismatic leadership and Great Man Theory. Last, coaching leadership styles as a form of post heroic leadership is illustrated.

Result: The empirical findings are based on the Netflix-documentary
The Playbook (2020). The empirical analysis chapter is divided according to certain themes that we have identified which all relate to the portrayal of the coaches. These themes are the good hero, the bad hero, the ugly hero and hero or scapegoat.

Conclusions: The implications of this study reveal that the portrayal of the
leaders continuously include hero-like attributes. We have also found that coaching leadership as a culturally accepted leadership theory today, appears not to be so separated from older and heroic forms of leadership as commonly thought. These implications might be especially prominent in portrayals of leaders in typically result-based organizations. (Less)
