- Abstract
- The link between gender and activism has been a theme in research about social movements. However, scholarly debates miss to critically reflect upon discursive constructions about women in revolutionary contexts in the global south. This study analyses the portrayal of Sudanese women in the digital space during the Sudanese revolution in 2018/2019 by focusing on the chronology and turning points of the uprisings. A postcolonial feminist perspective and critique has been applied and tested to turn away from hegemonial discourses and contribute to a shift in leading discourses that dominate academia, media and impact development practitioners and policymakers. A discourse analysis and elements of semiology helped to analyse visual and textual data gathered from public social media sites by two Sudanese women right groups. The findings reveal that women and gender-related aspects were gradually portrayed and expressed on social media, even after turning points, such as the fall of the regime. Furthermore, Othering and hegemonial discursive constructions about women from the global south as prescribed by a western feminist perspective contrast the depiction of the local Sudanese groups. This calls to further investigate discourses about women and shift existing dominant discourses that may manifest power asymmetries in academia and practice. (Less)
