Abstract
The sociotechnical systems that present societies operate within fail to address sustainability which contributes to the exacerbation of environmental, societal, and economic injustices. Sustainable innovations are considered a potential solution pathway. Nevertheless, to have large scale impact, they need to commercialize successfully. Scholars agree that sustainable business models are essential in supporting this endeavor and further research on the associated barriers and drivers is needed. Sustainable innovations face different factors to commercialize than their traditional counterparts. Sustainable innovations face different factors to commercialize than their traditional counterparts. To contribute to this nascent academic field, this study investigates Skosh, a startup based in Sweden that offers sustainable cleaning products. By conducting a qualitative single case study, this thesis contributes to existing literature in identifying hindering and supporting factors that affect the commercialization of sustainable innovations in reference to the operationalized sustainable business model. The results corroborate existing research and reveal a number of barriers and drivers which can be categorized into internal, external, and technological factors. Likewise, these factors do not act in isolation. Furthermore, this study finds that several functions of the business model mitigate certain barriers while strengthening some drivers. Finally, the financial situation of the firm poses as the strongest barrier, which is found to amplify other barriers and discourage related drivers. To foster the commercialization of sustainable innovations, regulations that encourage the involvement of supporting actors and which favor sustainable products and services to influence the purchasing behavior of civil society is suggested.
