- Abstract
- The main purpose of this study is to investigate how members of staff at group homes (LSS-bostäder) reason about the service users’ rights to self-determination in everyday life. Additionally, this study aims to investigate how group homes as a place may affect the fulfillment of self-determination rights.
The following theories “The theory of Recognition” and ”the Principle of normalization”, these theories have contributed to make a discussion analysis for the study as they state the requirements to achieve a ”living as all the others” scenario and explain how to incorporate self- determination in an everyday life.

The following theories “The theory of Recognition” and ”the Principle of normalization”, these theories have contributed to make a discussion analysis for the study as they state the requirements to achieve a ”living as all the others” scenario and explain how to incorporate self- determination in an everyday life.
The objective of this study is to make discoveries in the field of group homes. These discoveries can then be transferred to other contexts (like other group homes or employment för service users) in order to assist other researchers providing supporting evidence for further representative studies.
This study is a qualitative one based on interviews made to members of staff that work in group homes. In total there are seven participants and the analysis is based on the answers of the respondents. The only requirement for the participants was that they needed to be working in a group home.
As already stated, there would not be any particular representative results to present but some of the findings in the essay indicate that members of staff find complications accomplishing the right of self- determination in the day to day life of service users. Other aspects of the daily routine such as fatigue, shared spaces, standards of accommodation and difficulties in different situations have been proven to cause an impact in the day to day life of service users and their right to self- determination.
