Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
This master thesis in gender studies analyses how integration and Swedish citizenship are conceptualised in the official governmental report A Common Concern (SOU 2020:46), written by the Commission on Equality. Feminist and postcolonial theories on citizenship and belonging are used in combination with previous research on Swedish integration politics and inequalities in the welfare state. Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis is used as the methodological point of departure, by implementing chosen analytical tools from his three-dimensional framework. The analysis shows that concepts such as “social cohesion”, “human capital” and “gender equality”, as well as interdiscursive relations to ideas of a redistributive welfare state... (More)

The analysis shows that concepts such as “social cohesion”, “human capital” and “gender equality”, as well as interdiscursive relations to ideas of a redistributive welfare state and a neoliberal rationality, are central to the Commission’s conceptualisations of integration. Altogether, the thesis concludes that discourses on integration play a central part in both how and why the Commission advocates for a renewed social contract between the Swedish state and its citizens/residents. It also concludes that Swedish citizenship and national belonging are restricted by economic, cultural and gendered conditions and by various ideological assumptions about “Us” and “Them”. Finally, the conceptualisations of both integration and citizenship are shaped by the hegemonic social practice: capitalist realism, leaving the potential for increased equality quite limited. (Less)
