- Abstract
- The aim of this study has been to explore the perceptions of evidence-based practice among social workers along with how they perceive their prerequisites for working according to the evidence-based model. The social workers have been found within the children and family unit of the Swedish social services, and the evidence-based model was compared to that of the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. The study has taken a qualitative methodological approach to match with their perceptions of the described subjects. Their views were retrieved by using semi-structured interviews, giving them more freedom to express themselves according to their own perceptions of the topic at hand. The study has taken a qualitative methodological approach to match with their perceptions of the described subjects. Their views were retrieved by using semi-structured interviews, giving them more freedom to express themselves according to their own perceptions of the topic at hand. Whilst attempting to explore their circumstances, theories of “room for maneuver” and “street-level bureaucracy” have been used as an analytical framework. Furthermore, previous studies have shown that not many social workers have a clear grasp of what evidence-based practice actually is. The interviews were therefore conducted in a manner so that they spun over a wider range within the topic in an attempt to clarify their own, unaffected, perceptions. Among the five interviewees, spread throughout four municipalities, only one had a relative understanding of evidence-based practice, a supposedly key factor in conducting social work in Sweden. These results, along with others from the interviews, indicated that the social workers in question were not given, nor did they hold, all the tools they needed at their disposal in order to carry out the work within their profession. In conclusion, most results rather pointed towards a supervised, controlled and next-to diminished room for maneuver for the interviewees as they were attempting to carry out their profession. (Less)
