- Abstract
- The main purpose of this study was to investigate the violence men experienced from their female partner. We have through semi-structured interviews with nine men in heterosexual relationships in Sweden got an insight of men's experience of domestic violence. Our focus was the men's experience of the violence, how men experience the outside world's view of the men who are exposed to violence by their female partner and how men experience their contact with the police and social services. In the analysis, the empirical evidence is linked to previous research and theory about hegemonic and complicit masculinity and stigma. We came to the conclusion that men in the study have experienced different kinds of violence: physical, psychological, sexual and material violence. Psychological violence was the most common form of violence, but the other forms of violence also occurred to varying degrees. The results show that the society does not recognize the men as victims because it is more common that the woman is a victim of domestic violence. It was also found that men often reduce or deny the violence to which they have been exposed to. Due to the norms in society about the hegemonic man, it turned out that many men experience feelings of shame and guilt for having been exposed to violence by their female partner. It also turned out that several of the men had been portrayed as the perpetrator in the relationship despite being the
victim, this due to mistrust of abused men from the authorities and the surroundings. (Less)
