- Abstract
- What indicates that the Scandinavian bog bodies were places in bogs as a result of a ritual act?
This paper will try to look into this by studying different cases of bog bodies from the Early Iron Age. To answer this question, I will examine the various theories researchers provide regarding bog bodies and why they were deposited. In a time period and region which is mainly dominated by cremation, the bog bodies are proof of a very atypical burial practice for human remains. In a time period and region which is mainly dominated by cremation, the bog bodies are proof of a very atypical burial practice for human remains. Several scholars believe that the bog bodies can be interpreted as ritual sacrifices. Their argument for this, among other things, is based on the fact that bogs were places where people could make contact with the supernatural. In order to examine the selected cases of bog bodies, it is necessary to define and problematize the concept of ritual and sacrifice. I have used the practice theory and the comparative method to examine the signs of ritual practice in the archaeological material. The bog bodies fulfill several of the parameters that characterize structured deposits, including the fact that they deviate from the customary burial norm during this time period. (Less)
