Abstract
This study examines the reasons behind the government participation of radical right-wing populist parties in the Nordic countries, excluding Iceland. The reasons behind the inclusion of radical right-wing populist parties in government is investigated by looking at the government cooperation between mainstream parties and radical right-wing populist parties. This cooperation is analyzed using theories which argue that the government participation of radical right-wing populist parties is a consequence of a convergence of policy positions, particularly the movement of mainstream parties’ policy positions closer to radical right-wing populist parties’ policy positions. A qualitative comparison between the countries in question is done using a method of difference. Comparing Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden, the theories are used to analyze why radical right-wing populist parties have been in government in all of these countries, except Sweden. The results of this comparison show that a convergence of policy positions is not an adequate explanation behind the government participation of radical right-wing populist parties in the Nordic countries.
