- How important is national identity in the modern times of Sweden? The Swedish Armed forces have for a long time been seen as an authority based on stereotypes when only recruiting young masculine guys who are willing to fight with weapons for the nation. Sweden has become a multicultural country due to immigration which has also changed the link between national identity and citizenship. The integration has during the last decade been a discussed topic at the political agenda where Swedish authorities, by working with diversity plans, have tried to integrate the immigrants into labour.

The aim of this essay is to observe the perspective on national identity and how it affects diversity work in the most nationalistic authority in Sweden, Swedish Armed Forces. To be able this aim, this paper provides a relevant theoretical framework based on two aspects, diversity work and two different perspectives on national identity, ethnonationalism and citizen nationalism. Further, this paper analyze if there is a change in time of the approach of national identity in the material from the Swedish Armed Forces. The conclusion is that the Swedish Armed Forces has a citizen nationalistic goal of the diversity work over the years between 2010-2020, but which has little ground in reality. (Less)
