Abstract
Background: People with mental illness often have a reduced ability to process sensory inputs. Previously, the link between the individual way of dealing with sensory inputs and sociodemographic factors has been investigated in mentally healthy people, but there’s a lack of similar studies for people with mental illness.

Aim: To investigate sensory processing patterns and their possible connection to age, gender, education, and occupation in people with mental illness.

Method: 30 people with mental illness had in a larger clinical study been examined with Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile, AASP, which is a self-assessment tool that examines how a person processes different sensory inputs in their everyday life. The instrument... (More)

The instrument results in sumscores of four different sensory quadrants (Low Registration, Sensation Seeking, Sensory Sensitivity, Sensation Avoiding). Relationship analysis was performed with chi-square and the Spearman test.

Results: There was a statistically significant relationship between education and Sensation seeking (p=0.01), but there was no statistically significant relationship between the other quadrants and the sociodemographic data.

Conclusion: The knowledge can be used by the occupational therapist to better adjust the amount of sensory stimulus and increase compliance in various treatments and help people with mental illness towards a more active everyday life. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)

(More)

(Less)
