Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The study aimed to investigate how workplace incivility takes place among policemen and firemen in Sweden. The study also intended to investigate the presence of psychological safety and level of work engagement among policemen and firemen, and further if workplace incivility correlates with the experience of their work situation based on these variables. This in order to contribute with knowledge about how workplace incivility can take place and affect one in their work role as a police or fireman. The survey is designed as a cross-sectional study with quantitative data collection which means that no causal relationships can be determined. The survey is designed as a cross-sectional study with quantitative data collection which means that no causal relationships can be determined. The survey consisted of four demographic questions as well as three validated questionnaires: Workplace Incivility Scale (WIS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), and Team Psychological Safety Survey. The survey was distributed electronically and consisted of 64 participants, of which 2 were women and 62 were men. The majority of the participants were between 36-45 years old. The result showed that policemen and firemen experience low degree of workplace incivility (median = 0.57, q1 = 0.14, q3= 1.0), high level of work engagement (median = 4.78, q1 = 3.53, q3 = 5.11) and that there is a high prevalence of psychological safety (81,3 %). The result also showed a significant negative correlation between workplace incivility and work engagement (rho = -0.569, p = <.001), and a significant negative correlation between workplace incivility and psychological safety (rho = -0.392, p = 0.001). This demonstrates how the absence of workplace incivility can imply higher levels of work engagement and higher presence of psychological safety among the employees. (Less)
