- Abstract
- In 2015, all nations in the UN accepted the Sustainability Development Goals (SDG). Using indicators presented in the Kolada database, this thesis aims to analyze how the 290 municipalities in Sweden perform on the different goals. What factors affect how well the municipalities reach the goals, and how are the different dimensions of sustainability – social, economic and ecological – interconnected?
A principal component analysis (PCA) is performed. Using all 46 numerical variables, not enough correlation could be found for a PCA to be appropriate. This is an interesting result, since it shows that the three dimensions aren’t very connected to each other. Further, we find that the most important component for social and economic... A principal component analysis (PCA) is performed. Using all 46 numerical variables, not enough correlation could be found for a PCA to be appropriate. This is an interesting result, since it shows that the three dimensions aren’t very connected to each other. Further, we find that the most important component for social and economic sustainability is socio-economy. For ecological sustainability, urban/rural areas is the most important.
A lot of the differences are explained by factors the municipalities can’t control, like geographical location. The socio-economic factors is something that a municipality can affect, but a large part can be explained by segregation, which presents a challenge. The analysis shows that the social and economic dimensions are connected, but the ecological very much stands for itself without much correlation with the others two dimensions. (Less)
