Färgblindhet - utopi eller dystopi? - En kvalitativ studie om föräldrars uppfattning om vithetsnorm i samhället

- Abstract
- The aim of the study was to analyze if parents were aware of the white norm in Swedish society and if it affected them in any way. Through semi structured interviews at a children's center in the south of Scania, we ascertained the parents' perception of the white norm through the experiences that they shared. We also interviewed a preschool pedagogical teacher to gain their perspective of how the white norm affects the organisation and the work ethics at the children's center.
We have analyzed our material using two theories, postcolonial and intersectionality, to gain a deeper understanding of how stereotypical ideas are born and how they interact with and affect the individual and the greater society. We have used previous research... (More) - The aim of the study was to analyze if parents were aware of the white norm in Swedish society and if it affected them in any way. We have analyzed our material using two theories, postcolonial and intersectionality, to gain a deeper understanding of how stereotypical ideas are born and how they interact with and affect the individual and the greater society. We have used previous research articles to gain knowledge about how social organisations are able to adjust and tailor interventions to the cohort of people that fall outside of the white norm and to what extent.
The study focused on understanding the parents' perception of whiteness and Swedishness, in the analysis of the empirical material, stereotypes and prejudice were found to be a consequence of the media's portrayal of certain ethnic groups.
Part of the analysis were two fathers that both are part of separate multiethnic family, their account revealed that they are very much aware of the white norm in society and shared with us an insight into their experiences with prejudice and sometimes even racism. They both disclosed feelings of worry regarding how society will behave around their children as they grow older.
The outcome of the accounts shared with us, generated a further search for information on how social organisations work with families that are multiethnic. Research indicates that there is some awareness of cultural competency, however there is a further need for the social worker to become more aware of their own values in order to be critical of the norm that exists in both society and the organisations that they are part of.
