- Famine has played an essential part in the rise and fall of many civilizations. Yet, many considers the plight of famine a phenomenon of the past, reserved for but the poorest parts of the world. In Europe there are plenty examples of famine and hardship during the 19th century. When the most recent famine in Swedish history struck the area of Småland during the 1860s, the mortality distribution depended on factors such as gender, age and geography. With the main culprit contributing to the rising death toll being deduced to the spread of infectious diseases. Infectious diseases as a whole could explain a majority of all deaths during the famine in Småland between 1868 and 1869. Indicating that while the 19th century was a period of... (More)
