Partnership in the Broader Neighbourhood of the European Union

- Abstract
- Research on the role of the Visegrád Four (V4) in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) of the European Union (EU) is somewhat limited. While such topic has gained academic attention since the V4 assessed to the EU, hardly any studies have been pursued on the outputs of cooperation projects between the V4 and EaP members. Scholars dealing with this issue disagree on the capabilities of the V4 in the EaP, and this thesis seeks to fill this gap. By analysing projects implemented at civil-society level by the V4 in Georgia and Ukraine between 2016-2018, this thesis demonstrates that the V4 can be a reliable partner to promote EaP values. Using a content analysis of the projects combined with process tracing, this research contributes to the... (More)

Using a content analysis of the projects combined with process tracing, this research contributes to the literature around the V4 and their involvement in the wider neighbourhood of the EU. The analysis suggests that their experience of assession to Euro-Atlantic institutions is relevant for EaP civil society actors and can contribute to their democratisation and the development of the media. This would suggest that the V4 are an effective sub-regional group to promote European values in the extended neighbourhood. (Less)
