The rank has deteriorated after the suppression on non-governmental organizations, opposition party and independent media institutions before the national election in 2018. The Kingdom was then ranked 144th out of 180 countries in 2020 WPFI by the Reporters Without Borders (Cambodian Center for Independent Media, 2020). It is seen that press freedom in Cambodia is currently being restricted.
This thesis aims to study the experiences of journalists and critically analyze their thoughts and opinions about journalism in Cambodia. The qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 journalists who are working for independent news media in Cambodia. Independent news media here refer to news media agencies that are not affiliated with, funded or influenced by the Cambodian government.
The results indicate that journalists working for independent news media in Cambodia have been facing with prevention, intimidation and threat from the authority and in order to deal with these challenges, they needed to be patient and keep perseverance with professionalism within their work. The findings further disclose that freedom of press and expression in Cambodia is being constrained by the government. The research results also reveal key factors that drive Cambodian journalists to start their journalistic career and qualifications required to work as a journalist in Cambodia, including recommendations to alleviate the situation of freedom of press and expression in Cambodia.
