Through qualitative research on practitioners from IKEA global office, this study addresses these questions from the communication professional’s perspective. This study stresses four types of barriers and challenges in the organisation that inhibit employees’ critical constructive upward communication. It also highlights five different roles for practitioners to act in coaching and consulting functions to support and empower employee communication. It concluded that employee voice has received further attention than in the past and that practitioners play an important role in supporting employee communication. However, more resources and focus are needed on how communication practitioners can strategically work as coaches and consultants to support employee communication competencies to develop in the long term.
