- Abstract
- The development of Mälaräng in the southwestern part of Stockholm aims to bridge the social and economic gap in between neighboring areas Mälarhöjden and Bredäng. Theories of the Just City by Susan Fainstein and the Lively City constructed by Jane Jacobs are applied to investigate the planning of Mälaräng regarding social, economic and physical environment-factors through the lens of justice and liveliness, which is argued to be a requirement for integrating dissimilar parts of the city. The study shows that the municipal planning takes aspects surrounding the just and lively city in to account while planning the new neighborhood with creating possibilities of establishing shops on ground floor, varied forms of lease and a school which... The study shows that the municipal planning takes aspects surrounding the just and lively city in to account while planning the new neighborhood with creating possibilities of establishing shops on ground floor, varied forms of lease and a school which aims to attract students from both neighboring areas. From complementary theoretical framework though, the consequence of the planning conducted seems to be dependent on more complex phenomena than the factors mentioned, revolving around socioeconomic aspects affecting probabilities of getting hold of an apartment, gentrification as a possible outcome of the project and how the consultation with citizens has been conducted. The concluding result of the research is that the planning of Mälaräng has its main focal point on physical environment as tool for integration. Some effort regarding justice is made, with providing cheap housing and including citizens in the planning process, but other factors regarding social and economic aspects of planning may be missing to fulfill the aim of building a cohesive city. The study increases understanding of Swedish municipal planning in which the city tries to find ways to build a socially sustainable area in an economically limitative context. (Less)
