Abstract
What can we say about the future of art and the exhibition aspects of art? How are art institutions today co-creators in shaping conditions for the future, and how is the network of larger institutions connected to politics, as well as in the shaping of cultural heritage and the identity of a city? This essay examines how discourses for exhibitions are developed among three municipal institutions: Malmö konsthall, Malmö Kulturförvaltning and Malmö Konstmuseum. With Reader-response Theory, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis as well as Comparative Analysis, the thesis’ qualitative approach aims to, alongside with the question of the network between the three institutions, examine if, and how, statements from representatives of... With Reader-response Theory, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis as well as Comparative Analysis, the thesis’ qualitative approach aims to, alongside with the question of the network between the three institutions, examine if, and how, statements from representatives of municipal art institutions in Malmö are similar or dissimilar to statements from the representatives at art institutions in Sweden concerning the future of, and exhibition aspects of art.

Regarding the issue of the interconnectivity among the three institutions in Malmö, the results show that the three are intertwined and that the institutions publish their information online concerning their purpose and mission. This is closely based upon the enunciated goals of Kulturnämnden, for instance with regards to questions of inclusivity for all the citizens in Malmö stad regardless of age, socioeconomic status or ethnicity. Another similarity is the focus of art in the urban space, in which Kulturförvaltningen, Konsthallen and Konstmuseet are deeply involved and collaborative with each other.

The comparative analysis demonstrates that the interpreted conceptions on the future of art differ locally versus nationally; the representative from Malmö believes that there might be a change of attitude regarding activism for the climate or social justice – these themes could be the object of an intensification. The apprehension of the future among national representatives in the art sector believes that the future should, and might, be the object of increased cooperation between artists as well as with academia and science. Another dimension that is brought up is the autonomy and existential aspects of art and art perception. (Less)
