Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine social service workers’ experiences of the relationship between their work-sphere and their private-sphere, as well as understand how they discuss this relationship. We conducted eight qualitative semi-structured interviews with social service workers who work with child welfare, in five different social services in Skåne. The material we obtained from the interviews was analyzed using work/family border theory and the concept accounts. We used work/family border theory to understand ways that the different social service workers put up their borders between the two spheres, how the borders were affected by different circumstances and how the two spheres could interact. The material we obtained from the interviews was analyzed using work/family border theory and the concept accounts. We used work/family border theory to understand ways that the different social service workers put up their borders between the two spheres, how the borders were affected by different circumstances and how the two spheres could interact. We used the concept accounts to analyze the way that the social service workers explained their actions, while discussing the relationship between the two spheres. The study found that the different social service workers had different ways of putting up borders between work and private life. Some of them felt that it was very difficult and that their work-life took over, while others experienced that they easily could separate the two spheres. We also found that the social service workers who had children of their own expressed that their children helped them to separate the two spheres, since when they were in their private sphere they had to focus on the children. The study has found that the social service workers experienced both upsides and downsides of working from home. Although some expressed that they are less bothered by other things happening in their office and can focus more on working, some expressed that they did household chores while working, and therefore combined the two spheres. This result was very individual and differed between the social service workers. We also found that the social service workers on occasion explained their unfavorable behavior by using justifications and excuses. (Less)
