Abstract (Swedish)
Addiction to alcohol and drugs is a severe social problem all over the world and in all fields of social work. One of the most common treatments for addiction in Sweden is the Twelve Step Program (Socialstyrelsen 2021, s. 43). The aim of this study is therefore to explore how recovering addicts describe their recovery generally and in relation to spirituality. The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews with recovering addicts who have gone through the program, either in treatment centres or in self-help groups in southern Sweden. When analysing the results, we have used White’s (2007) and Topor’s (2001) definition of the recovery- concept and Antonovsky’s (2005) SOC-theory (sense of coherence) to illustrate the variation of ways to describe one’s recovery-process. This study found that recovering addicts describe a certain rock-bottom as important for their recovery and that some relationships were driving in the process of getting sober or clean. This study also found that there are numerous ways of defining spirituality and its physical expression in former addicts' lives. This study has attempted to showcase what areas need to be furthermore researched in treatments for addiction and to show how spirituality can be used as a tool in recovery. (Less)
