Abstract
The aim of this paper was to study the relatedness of stress and emotional labor in the daily work of the school social worker in the 10th-13th year of school (svenska gymnasium) in Sweden. The aim also included exploring experiences of the impact of the relationships with coworkers within the context of experienced work related stress. The chosen method for this study was a qualitative approach where we conducted semi-structured interviews with the six participating school social workers. The selection was based on the professional role of the school social worker holding the psychosocial perspective in the 10th-13th year of school based in Sweden. The interviews were held both in person (in a physical space) as well as digitally (by... (More)

The interviews were held both in person (in a physical space) as well as digitally (by phone or video). We found that emotional labor in the setting of the school socialworker mostly happens within the context of the student-school social worker meeting. Many school social workers felt that they had a role in an educational setting, and this was a particular aspect of the school social workers in comparison to the more general social worker. In the study we also found the result that supervision in the work of the school social work is undoubtedly very important. Through this work we also found that good co-working relationships were a great deal helpful in different situations where some were due to stress. We have explored our findings from an emotional perspective using emotional labor (Arlie Hochschild), the dramaturgical theory (Goffman) and communities of coping (Korczynski). Finally, it came to surface that the school social workers found their jobs perhaps less stressful than we first had the impression of and that many of them expressed enjoyment in their work. (Less)
