The present study found that the peer supporter was viewed neither as a patient or as a self evident part of the employed professionals. This led to the peer supporter having a liminal identity with a unique position between patients and staff members. This position could give rise to role conflicts and role ambiguity, but also create further opportunities for the peer supporter in developing their role based on new terms. Additionally, the peer support could also be a tool for the organizations as they strive for legitimacy. Further research should examine the role conflicts and role ambiguity from the peer supporters point of view, but also the possible effect the peer supporter can have on both the user organizations as well as the health care.
