Abstract
This report aims to develop a prototype for an intuitive microwave oven adapted for people with a cognitive illness. Cognitive disorders manifest themselves as a deterioration of mental abilities such as memory and planning. It is a category of disease that is becoming more widespread. A major problem among people suffering from a cognitive disorder is malnutrition. The disease might affect the appetite and also create problems in the kitchen. Many tools and technical devices are too complicated for a person with a cognitive disorder. Creating a simplified and adapted microwave oven according to the special needs of cognitive illness could prevent nutritional deficiencies and contribute to an increased quality of life. The work of developing such a microwave oven is in collaboration with H22 and the health and care administration at Maria Park, Helsingborg. The result is a microwave oven where the user simply presses one button to start the microwave oven. Sensors measure the temperature of the food and adjust the heating accordingly. In addition to this, it has increased safety as it interrupts the heating if a metal is detected by the microwave oven and also signals the user to remove the metal. It will increase independence among people with a cognitive illness while at the same time relieving both care staff and relatives. The microwave oven has a broader target group since there are more people who have difficulty understanding technical devices, such as people suffering from other mental functional variations, older people, and children.
