Abstract
The Impostor Phenomenon is a concept that is well-known in pop-culture literature, but has received significantly less attention in academic contexts. Individuals experiencing the phenomenon have difficulty attributing their successes and achievements to personal factors and often feel like a fraud. The aim of this project was to contribute to the current literature on it, by both validating the Swedish version of the Impostor Profile scale (IPP30) and employing a person-oriented approach to explore profiles of impostors by conducting two separate studies. The first study used both Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis to examine the structure of the IPP30. Further, Pearson correlations were used to explore how IPP30... (More)

Further, Pearson correlations were used to explore how IPP30 subscales are related to important variables achieving the goal of validating the IPP30 in a sample of Swedish students (N = 1,010; women 76.7%, Mage = 25.65, SDage = 6.34). The analyses found the scale to have good reliability and validity. Two items in the scale were found to measure their affiliated subscales poorly, so a rephrasing of these items was suggested. Latent Profile Analysis was used in the second study to explore profiles of impostors in a different sample of Swedish students (N = 1,133; women 61.6%, Mage = 23.72, SDage = 4.62). Findings from this study gathered evidence for the theory of a heterogeneity of the Impostor Phenomenon, by suggesting five profiles of impostors for both women and men based on levels of impostor feelings: “Absent Impostorism”, “Impostor Thoughts”, “Well-Adjusted Impostors”, “Vulnerable Impostors”, and “Distressed Impostors”. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed, including the need for a replication of these results in different populations. (Less)
