Abstract (Swedish)
Helamalmö is an organization working in politically neglected areas where they implement social solutions to social problems. This essay aims to study Helamalmö's structural work for social change and analyze how their relational work with children and youths contributes to the experience of safety, belonging and faith in the future. The results present empirical data collected through interviews, which is analyzed through the three societal levels, macro, meso and micro, using Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of needs and sociological definitions of the concepts of precariousness, ontological security, and affinity. The results show that Helamalmö's structural work for social change to counteract social injustices take place mainly... (More)
Helamalmö is an organization working in politically neglected areas where they implement social solutions to social problems. The results show that Helamalmö's structural work for social change to counteract social injustices take place mainly through (1) the creation of new social infrastructure and community organizing as well as (2) opinion formation and dissemination of knowledge. Helamalmö’s work with children and youths is adapted to children’s needs and relationship-focused by executing the following practical efforts: (1) continuously present assuring adults committed to the well-being of children, (2) a welcoming and inclusive community, (3) voluntary activities and conversations to build trust, and (4) the feeling of being a family. The personal encounter with leaders from Helamalmö is described as the main component for continued commitment within the organization. The essay´s conclusions suggest that Helamalmö's success partly depends on personal commitment and the ability to create trust rather than a certain organizational model. (Less)
