Objectification of women: The effects of pornography consumtion and traditional masculine norms

- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to examine if pornographic consumption and traditional masculine norms can predict the objectification of women. Furthermore, the purpose of exploring the subject of the study was to contribute with knowledge and psychological research about the effects of pornography as pornography’s’ role in contemporary society is greater than in recent decades and relatively unexplored. The data was produced through a digital survey, which was answered by males over the age of 18 who consume heterosexual pornography. One part of the survey used a novel dynamic method where participants could state whether they would continue watching fictional pornographic scenes, with increasingly violent content, or if they would indicate that they would not view it at some point. Objectification of women was regressed onto pornographic consumption and traditional masculine norms, showing that only the latter predictor contributed uniquely to the variance in objectification. However, we could not find a correlation between objectification of women and pornographic consumption through our quantitive data. The results from the dynamic data indicated that those who would watch more violent fictional scenarios also tended to score higher on the scales that measured objectification and masculine norms. Based on these results it seems that it may not be the amount of consumption that contributes to objectification, but it depends on the nature of the pornography consumed (violen/non-violent) that could lead to stronger objectification. These findings may be important both for understanding the links between masuline norms, porn consumption, and objectification of women, but also may indicate a need to specialize interventions based on if the consumed material is violent or not. Finally, it also speaks to the potential issue that normalization of violence against women in porn has within the context of men’s violence against women in society. (Less)
