Abstract
Rare books, defined in this study as books printed or written before 1850, can be found at the Swedish municipal archives but are not necessarily a part of the traditional archival material. Due to the fact that rare books are not protected by law, the municipal archives can work and think differently about the rare books’ preservation, availability and value. There are several studies on the subject concerning how libraries handle rare books within their collections but only a few studies that evoke how archives handle this type of material. The aim of this master’s thesis is therefore to shed some light on how some municipal archives preserve their rare books, how they make them available and what status they have within the collections... There are several studies on the subject concerning how libraries handle rare books within their collections but only a few studies that evoke how archives handle this type of material. The aim of this master’s thesis is therefore to shed some light on how some municipal archives preserve their rare books, how they make them available and what status they have within the collections as well as what type of values they can represent. The study’s result is drawn from interviews with sixteen respondents representing fifteen municipal archives. The results of this study shows that not all municipal archives have rare books within their collections. Some archives have only one or a few books while others have collections. Regarding the preservation, this study shows that in several cases, the archives are not used to handle this type of material and therefore there is an insecurity regarding how to preserve the books in the best way. As for the public access to these books, all archives give public access to the books, if there is a public demand. However, several of the archives do not have any information about their books in their catalogues which makes the books impossible to find for someone who does not know about their existence. Some of the respondents in this study consider that rare books should be a natural part of the archive’s collections or at least that they should be included if they add value to the other archival material in some way, while other respondents think that the preservation of rare books is not a part of the municipal archive’s mission. The respondents also value their rare books differently. The books can bring value to the archive’s collections thanks to the information they contain or by the fact that they have been a part of the local history, sometimes by simply existing in the local area. In some cases, the books are seen as a part of the cultural heritage. (Less)
