Abstract (Swedish)
This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between two buildings situated at
Universitetsholmen in Malmö: Tornhuset (1910) and its modern extension Urban Hinges (2015). Together, the two buildings form World Maritime University. The modern extension has received a great deal of attention, both positive and negative, in traditional as well as in social media. Several statements suggest that viewers seem to interpret physical and psychological qualities in the buildings, thus experiencing a relationship between them. The starting point of this discussion is that the relationship is complicated. This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between two buildings situated at

The modern extension has received a great deal of attention, both positive and negative, in traditional as well as in social media. Several statements suggest that viewers seem to interpret physical and psychological qualities in the buildings, thus experiencing a relationship between them. The starting point of this discussion is that the relationship is complicated. Its purpose is to illustrate and discuss a number of aspects which may contribute to the experienced complicated nature of the relationship, and to contribute to a broadened understanding of the coexistence of the two buildings.

Observations of the examined objects are discussed in relation to three
theoretical perspectives: from history, gestalt psychology and psychoanalysis. The historical perspective accounts in short for how physicality has been linked to architecture throughout history and describes a Vitruvian, a projecting and an animistic approach. The perspective of gestalt psychology illustrates a few aspects of the buildings that may constitute visual difficulties. Lastly, the examination objects are discussed with a psychoanalytic perspective, mainly considering the concepts Das Unheimliche and Oceanic Feeling. The survey results
show that there are a number of aspects that make the relationship complicated, for example that Urban Hinges is visually rootless and that the viewers experience emotional ambivalence when facing the buildings.
