The discussion of the study focuses on the interrelationships of “digital technologies”, “place”, “space”, and “mobility”. Semi-structured interviews and digital ethnography have been combined as the research method while qualitative text analysis has been utilized to analyze the collected data. This thesis has drawn upon theories in an interdisciplinary subject of communication geography, but also has taken concepts from other disciplines as inspiration.
Through analyzing the affordances of digital technologies, this thesis has examined how digital technologies make the mobile lifestyle become possible and what kind of places have been constructed during this practice. This thesis has then examined the effects of co-working spaces and their role in digital nomads’ mobile working experiences. After discussing digital nomads’ work characteristics on the move, it has further explored the dialectical relations between individual work and collective work, as well as the disadvantages caused by this mobile work. This thesis has thoroughly investigated their living space presentation and life choices from a more abstract metaphysical aspect. It has discussed the life status they show, distinguished from those in fixed working places. By representing their changing life choices, this thesis has probed deeper into the hidden power they are fighting against, which reflects the nomadism metaphysics. This thesis has last investigated digital nomads’ inner feelings and emotions towards places and nomadic experiences. After discussing the freedom and loneliness ideology, it has revealed the inner struggles of digital nomads and their sense of place through listening to their voices. (Less)
