With various attempts trying to adopt the transnational experienced idol production within the challenging Chinese context, numerous reality television talent shows had been introduced in the past few years. After the very first boy group talent show, Idol Producer (2018), swept through China with an enormous number of audiences absorbed, a great triumph of the renaissance of talent show trend was underway by updating it to an idol version. However, the national wide talent show frenzy did not last long enough for those fans, things have taken a turn in 2021. Just as they rose to prominence by attracting more audiences and turning them into fans, their decline is also related to fans.
Two high-profile male group survival shows were held in the first half of 2021, while the Produce Camp 2021 (also known as Chuang 2021) smoothly came to its grand finale, the Youth With You 3 has been terminated by the Chinese media government bureau a few days before its grand finale because of the milk-wasting scandal[ Fans can only buy milk product from the partner of this show and scan the QR code on the cap to vote for the idols they choose. Many ardent fans buy milk in boxes in order to support their idols, then dump it all afterwards.] in May. The ensuing internal intel was that the following election of Voice of China 2021 and Produce Camp 2022 had been called off. And shortly after the governmental cancellation order was released, a special series movement named ‘Qinglang’ deployed and carried out by Cyberspace Administration Office has officially included the fandom ‘chaos’ in the focus of governance in 2021. On June 15, the Office announced the nationwide special movement ‘Qinglang’ - ‘fandom chaos rectification’ will be conducted. Things come one after another, on September 2nd, 2021, the National Radio and Television Administration of China published a notice on its official website about further strengthening the management of entertainment repertoire and its personnel, which included a regulation that explicitly called for the resolute elimination of perverted aesthetics such as ‘feminine men’, causing widespread concerns and discussions among Chinese society. On January 6, 2022, the cancellation of Chinese idol reality shows has confirmed by the National Radio and Television Administration. Up to this point, the short but glorious history of Chinese idol reality shows has come to a temporary end.
Looking back on the ups and downs, there is no way to ignore that fandom surely has facilitated the fast growth of idol reality shows, likewise, cast down the ultimate collapse.
Under these circumstances, the once thriving idol reality industry has take a hard hit with an unclear future, fans seem to have flowed with it. However, the audiences of idol reality TV will not disappear, nor will the idol fans. Facing the multi-layered irresistible opposition, where will audiences and fans be heading? (Less)
