Abstract
The present study was a replication report where it investigates suppression-induced forgetting (SIF) using the think/no-think experimental paradigm and the thought avoidance strategy when tested using the same cue (same probe) and novel cue (independent probe) during learning of neutral words. Same probe test has been examined to demonstrate high sensitivity in detecting inhibition via the relationship link between cue and target items. In contrast, the independent probe test has showed a better estimate of inhibition of the target item directly. The current report also incorporated whether there was a relationship between SIF and all of the personality dimensions from the Big 5 (e.g., Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion,... (More)

Same probe test has been examined to demonstrate high sensitivity in detecting inhibition via the relationship link between cue and target items. In contrast, the independent probe test has showed a better estimate of inhibition of the target item directly. The current report also incorporated whether there was a relationship between SIF and all of the personality dimensions from the Big 5 (e.g., Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) using a well-documented personality inventory such as the faceted inventory five factor model (FI-FFM). Participants (N = 38) completed the behavioral think/no-think experimental paradigm and personality inventory questionnaires. The behavioral result from the think/no-think paradigm revealed that there was a significant SIF for both same and independent probe tests as well as a practice effect. Interestingly, there was additional relationship findings between independent probe test SIF and practice effect with some of the personality dimensions. SIF effect has been debated by many researchers whether inhibition could be generated due to the sensitivity of the associative link between cue target items (same cue) or from the target items itself (novel cue). Thus, the present report has contributed to provide empirical evidence in detecting SIF effect between same and independent probe tests and give additional information about the importance of personality dimension in influencing memory suppression.
