Abstract
Since the beginning of 1990s anti-gender movements have been increasing throughout Europe, opposing LGBT rights, abortion, democracy and gender studies. However, in some countries an organized anti-gender movement has not been seen, but still the same words and arguments used to mobilize against gender issues can be found. One such case is Sweden, where academics and editorials have criticized the scientific field of gender studies, among other things. Based on a feminist post-structuralist framework, a critical discourse analysis and a theoretical framework consisting Sara Ahmed's theory on the cultural politics of emotions and Ruth Wodak's theory of the politics of fear, this thesis examines and compares the words and argumentation used in the book Genusdoktrinen written by Ivar Arpi and Anna-Karin Wyndhamn with other European anti-gender movements. The thesis conclusion is that Genusdoktrinen, through its rhetoric, constructs gender studies as a threat to academic freedom, and furthermore the society. Genusdoktrinen can therefore be classified as an Swedish anti-gender campaign with clear links to European discourses. This is because similar arguments, word choices and metaphors are presented in the book as in the rest of Europe. (Less)
