Abstract
This study seeks to determine how elementary school teachers in Denmark
versus Sweden experience their national school law when it comes to
values within it. It also examines how Danish and Swedish teachers work to
ensure motivation for learning and how they work to prepare their students
for active democratic citizenship. This bachelor’s thesis is based upon a
small qualitative analysis of six interviews with a total of three teachers
from each country. Theoretic inspiration with regards to motivation was
found in self-determination theory and its view on autonomy, competence
and relatedness as feelings that are viewed as important inorder to allow
motivation. Among democratic theories a deliberative democracy was

found in self-determination theory and its view on autonomy, competence
and relatedness as feelings that are viewed as important inorder to allow
motivation. Among democratic theories a deliberative democracy was
focused upon, whereas philosophers such as Habermas and his view on
communication and deliberation was included. Results and analysis
couldn’t make out national differences within teachers' perceptions of
school law and their work methods, however it appeared that the teachers
regardless of country perceived their school law had fair values. The
teachers' work methods to ensure motivation in learning and democracy
also pointed towards similar methods within both countries. These included
work methods such as ensuring a good class environment and relationships. (Less)
