Å brodere : møter og framtider i Västra Hamnen, Malmø

- Abstract (Norwegian)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Many theorists have argued that vision and geometry have been given too much precedence within architecture and architectural representation. This thesis uses feminist theory that criticizes the way that space and the future traditionally have been represented. It discusses how the tools that architects use to describe space and future, can affect the how they think. The starting point for the discussions is the area Västra Hamnen in Malmö. The main tools are spontaneous interviews and embroidery. Embroidery has a reputation for being decorative, and in that sense “superfluous”. It exists somewhere between decoration and construction, between representation and material. This makes it an interesting starting point for discussions about the... (More)

This makes it an interesting starting point for discussions about the difference between representation and thought model; between decoration and construction; between what is considered “proper” and “improper” in the idea of ideal space; and how representations relate to time. Because the interaction with the embroideries can be described as dynamic and haptic, it becomes different from the interaction with more traditional representations, which is often more static. The fact that embroidery has traditionally
been used for repair, might also make it a good model for thinking about architecture as something that should not just be built up, but also taken care off, in the present. The interviews have led to their own insights, for example that many view Västra Hamnen as something that is to be “completed”, and that it is easier to get people to imagine alternative futures on sites that are not yet built. Perhaps this openness can be seen as a quality in its own right. (Less)
