Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
During the spring of 2022, the Stockholm-based newspaper Dagens Nyheter established two newsrooms in the cities Luleå and Umeå located in the north of Sweden. The purpose was to communicate news events from Norrland to a national audience. From the start of the newsrooms until the time of this study, around 180 articles were published.

The aim of this study is to investigate how the region of Norrland is represented and framed in the coverage from Dagens Nyheter and to discover if the choice to establish themselves in Norrland have had any impact on the image of Norrland that is communicated. Previous research shows that Norrland has been generalized and stereotyped in media through a perspective of orientalism. Norrland has been... (More)

Norrland has been portrayed as the other and a weaker region in a process of forming a national identity for the rest of the country. Certain attributes connected to Norrland has produced a mirror for other parts of Sweden, that will be associated with the opposite attributes.

All published articles have been analyzed through a quantitative content analysis, focusing on theories of orientalism, news values, and representation. Reporters from Dagens Nyheter were interviewed regarding the newsrooms routines and the results from the quantitative content analysis were discussed. The purpose of the interviews was for the study to gain knowledge and understanding of the reporter’s context.

A clear perspective of orientalism could not be identified in the material. The region is largely described in relation to the green transition of industries, and the big investments being made in Norrland’s new environmental green change. Most of the communicated negative attributes connected to Norrland were associated with the big societal developments
that take place because of the big economic growth in the region. The absence of underreported areas and subjects was mostly explained by long geographical distances, limited resources and news values principles that prioritize the national audience.

The absence of a clear perspective of orientalism in the coverage is believed to have several reasons. Changes in society do not make it possible for Norrland to be portrayed with some of the former negative attributes. The geographical closeness and the association with and knowledge of the region within the newsroom´s reporters could also have an impact on the region not being portrayed in a stereotypical way or from a perspective of orientalism.
